I Am Counting Your Steps

When my first grandchild was learning to walk he spent several days a week at our house. I have always enjoyed teaching young children to walk and talk and have tried to work with them when I have the opportunity. One day, my wife and I had been sitting in the floor teaching my grandson to walk from one of us to the other. At this time, he could only take a few steps before he would loose his balance and we would have to catch him.

As we were waiting for his mother to pick him up that day, the Holy Ghost said, "When a child is learning to walk, you can ask a mother how many steps that the child took that day, and the mother can tell you because she is counting their steps. You could ask her how many times the child fell and she couldn't tell you because she doesn't count the times that the child fell. Likewise, I am counting your steps and not your failures."

This certainly placed our failures as a Christian in a new light. As long as we keep trying, God is not concerned with how many times we fail. He's counting and keeping a record of our successes, not our failures. Just as with a child, failures are inevitable when you are trying to learn something new. The young child doesn't get disappointed with his failures either, he's excited about his successes. In determination, he gets up and keeps trying, looking forward to his eventual accomplishment.

To God, we are children and everything that we learn from him is new to us as young Christians. He is rejoicing over our every step and knows that if we will just keep trying, we will make it. Failures are inevitable, but he's not recording those. We need to be excited about what we have accomplished and not let our failures condemn us. Just keep getting back up and continue trying. There's no place to quit and no need to dwell on our failures. God isn't, so why should we.
